Between the villages of Asselt, Swalmen, and Beesel, tucked away in the tranquil nature reserve of Beesels Broek in Central Limburg, lies the centuries-old farmstead Baxhof. Not far from the famous Limburg hills, this is an area of lakes and water. The former tithe barn of this farmhouse has been converted into an attractive holiday home called La Grange Baxhof (French for ‘barn’). This holiday home is the ideal setting for family and friends to enjoy spending time together, surrounded by nature and history. The accommodation can also be used as a venue for meetings, themed workshops, yoga clinic, or retreats combined with overnight accommodation.
Then and now
Dating back to the Middle Ages, the Baxhof farmstead has a rich history. The remnants of a former castle – the bartizan and the dry moat – are still prominent to this day. The owners were aware that the farmhouse had a long and special past, but the discovery of the very well-preserved knights’ hall from 1480 is evidence that Baxhof is much more than your average Limburg farmstead. The Poels family has lived at the farmstead for four generations and are keen to tell others about the site’s dynamic history. So, in 2010, driven by a mission to preserve the building’s history and let others enjoy this special piece of heritage, the Obers-Poels family decided to transform the farmstead’s tithe barn into a holiday home. The family have successfully turned this unique property into an equally unique destination. Detailed information on the farmstead’s history can be found at www.lagrangebaxhof.nl/historie (available in Dutch only).
Let’s take a look inside
The holiday home is located on the south side of the farmstead. As soon as you step into the home, you will immediately notice the spacious rooms, high ceilings, and gorgeous furnishings. Through the hall, you enter a large living space with a Belgian bluestone floor and oak rafters. The stable doors with historical year engravings and the six-metre-long table are the showpieces of this charming living space.
The well-equipped kitchen is the perfect place to cook and dine together as you enjoy the gorgeous views of the courtyard and other parts of the farmstead, including the oldest residential building with the knights’ hall.
The holiday home has been designed to pay homage to the listed building’s history and character. You can feel the history of the place in every room, complete with period features. Of course, the hay bales have now been replaced by luxury box-spring beds! The ground floor has two double bedrooms, two toilets, a bathroom with shower, washbasin, and toilet, and a large games room. The staircase next to the living room leads to the first floor, which has six bedrooms and bathrooms, and the second floor has three more bedrooms with bathrooms. The family have achieved their mission of creating a place for guests to spend time together and create lasting memories. The garden and the patio, the kitchen, the living room, and the games room are for you all to enjoy! Rest assured, you don’t all have to share one bedroom: there are ten of them!
Event/meeting room
Next to the living area is a multifunctional space (of 72 m2) suitable for private or professional events. For example, this room is perfect for meetings in an informal, welcoming atmosphere. By opening the oak sliding doors, the space can be combined with the living room.
Outdoor space
A south-facing terrace overlooks the vast meadows, orchards, and Beesels Broek forest. Younger guests can have fun in the playground, which has a set of football goals, a balance course, boules court, two sunken trampolines, tree swings, and a slide right into the dry moat! And with several beautiful hiking trails starting at the front door, hiking and cycling enthusiasts are in for a treat. With a bit of luck, you will come face to face with deer, roe, wild boar, squirrels, hares, and pheasants. We highly recommend a guided walk with our very knowledgeable and passionate guide Frans Tegels. Please e-mail [email protected] or call +31 (0)681470235 for more information.
