Located in the middle of a park with ponds, the 16-person holiday home Kasteel Strijthagen in Landgraaf is a gem among Beaujean Vacances’ holiday homes and is truly breathtaking. The Landgoed Strijthagen estate includes the château, an outer bailey, a steward’s house, a huge art exhibition, and forests and fishing ponds. Always wanted to be a lord or lady of the manor? This is your chance.
Strijthagen Estate – Then and now
Records show that the Strijthagen estate has existed since the 13th century. During its rich history, the château has often changed appearance and owner. Some of the previous owners include the Oranje Nassaumijnen mines and artist Aad de Haas. The current owners are Alexander and Katja. Alexander is a sculptor known for his huge bronze creations, and Katja is an experienced painter. When the two visited the estate together in 2015, they said it was a sorry sight. The courtyard of the outer bailey was like a wild forest, the gardens were overgrown, and the buildings themselves were in a terrible state of repair. For two years, Alexander and Katja worked to restore the estate to its former glory. During the renovation, they left the original features intact as much as possible, but they also each put their own, creative signature on the building.
Arrival
When you arrive at the estate, you will see the courtyard of the white, U-shaped outer bailey on your left. Through the large fence on your right you will enter the grounds of Kasteel Strijthagen. Here you’ll find sixteen life-size bronze members of the Night’s Watch awaiting your arrival. To your right you will see the terracotta-coloured estate manager’s house which is home to the owners and their two daughters. Walk straight ahead to enter your holiday home via the stately staircase.
Let’s take a look inside
You enter the holiday home via an impressive hall that has art pieces and a beautiful checkerboard floor. Above the wide staircase is a huge mural created by Katja and Alexander’s daughter. Across the hall is the cosy dining room: with a diamond chandelier, velvet curtains, and original wall decorations, it’s a real feast for the eyes. Walk through the French doors in the dining room onto the terrace, where you have a beautiful view of the gardens and fishing ponds. To the left of the dining room is the well-equipped, original kitchen, and to the right of the dining room is a second dining room. The ground floor also has a separate toilet and a living room with a large corner sofa and flat-screen TV.
On the first floor are four bedrooms, all uniquely decorated to match the style and allure of the château. Each bedroom is named after an artist. The double bedrooms ‘Van Gogh’ and ‘Aad de Haas’ are connected by means of a dividing door. The ‘Van Gogh’ bedroom has its own en-suite with toilet, sink, and bath. These rooms are therefore very suitable as family rooms. Guests sleeping in the other rooms on the first floor can use the luxurious, separate bathroom with bath, shower, sink, and toilet and decorated with beautiful Spanish wall tiles. There is a multipurpose room on the first floor, which can be converted into a conference room on request.
On the second floor, which can be reached via two staircases, are the other five bedrooms: two quadruple rooms and three double rooms. These bedrooms are decorated with unique art pieces and also have a private bathroom. Sleeping under a six-metre-high timber roof truss, complete with original rafters, is truly something special. On the second floor is a second, fully equipped living room and open-plan kitchen. This room is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a good book or an exciting film.
Outdoor space
Kasteel Strijthagen guests have access to a lovely terrace and a sprawling landscape of meadows, woodland and fish ponds. Cast your fishing rod in the fish pond or take a stroll through the woods. It is also well worth taking a wander through Katja’s art gallery to admire her art exhibition, or to look at Alexander’s impressive bronze statues in the courtyard of the outer bailey. There is also lots to discover beyond the grounds. For example, the estate is literally in the back garden of the Mondo Verde theme park and a stone’s throw from GaiaZOO.
