Holiday home Klokkentoren (Clock Tower) is a unique holiday accommodation from the Beaujean Vacances collection. This 8-person holiday home is situated in the middle of a park dotted with ponds in Landgraaf, and is part of the Strijthagen Estate. This estate encompasses a castle, outer bailey, estate manager’s lodge, a gigantic art exhibition, woodland and fish ponds.
Strijthagen Estate – Then and now
Records show that the Landgoed Strijthagen estate has existed since the 13th century. During its rich history, the château has often changed appearance and owner. Some of the previous owners include the Oranje Nassaumijnen mines and artist Aad de Haas. The current owners are Alexander and Katja. Alexander is a sculptor known for his huge bronze creations. Katja is an experienced painter. When the two visited the estate together in 2015, they said it was a sorry sight. The courtyard of the outer bailey was like a wild forest, the gardens were overgrown, and the buildings themselves were in a terrible state of repair. For two years, Alexander and Katja worked to restore the estate to its former glory. During the renovation, they left the original features intact as much as possible, but they also each put their own, creative signature on the building.
Arrival
When you arrive at the estate, you will see the courtyard of the white, U-shaped outer bailey on your left. Here you can admire a number of Alexander’s large bronze artworks. On the left side of the gate you will find the stairs up to the Klokkentoren holiday home, which is located partly in the outer bailey and partly in the clock tower.
Let’s take a look inside
The small hall leads to two studios and the staircase to the living areas. The two studios are part of the 8-person holiday home, and both have their own seating area, kitchenette, bathroom, and bedroom. The studio on the mezzanine has a double bedroom; the other studio has a quadruple room. If you go up the stairs in the hall, you will first reach the mezzanine floor with a double bedroom and bathroom with shower, sink, and toilet. Klokkentoren’s beautiful kitchen-diner is the perfect place to cook and dine. The kitchen is equipped with a 4-ring ceramic hob, convection oven, Senseo coffee machine, kettle, and other appliances. One floor up is the spacious living room with corner sofa and flat-screen TV, where you can see and hear the mechanism of the two tower clocks as well as the dials. The chime can be switched off if it’s disturbing you.
Outdoor space
There is a lovely, covered, private terrace in the fruit orchard outside the outer bailey. Guests of Landgoed Strijthagen also have access to a huge outdoor area with meadows, forests, and fishing ponds – perfect for fishing or a relaxing stroll. It’s also worth taking a walk through Katja’s art gallery or admiring Alexander’s impressive bronze sculptures in the courtyard of the outer bailey. There’s also so much to explore outside the grounds. The estate is literally in the back garden of Mondo Verde theme park and a stone’s throw from GaiaZOO.
