Nestled at the end of a quiet lane in the charming village of Wijlre (near the Brand Beer Brewery) is one of the most well-known authentic water mills in South Limburg, housing two holiday homes: 'Het Bakhuis' for 4 people and 'De Graanschuur' for 9 people. The water mill dates back to 1776 and serves for electricity generation and occasionally for milling grain. A unique location where the holiday atmosphere will embrace you instantly, and the owners Bianca and Jo will warmly welcome you. The unique setting, with the village center within walking distance, hiking trails right next door, and the murmuring Geul River in the backyard, make this a perfect stay in South Limburg!
Inside
The name says it all... 'Het Bakhuis,' where in earlier times pies and bread were baked for the family and their servants. The holiday home has been rebuilt on a larger scale but has not lost its form and character from earlier times. 'Het Bakhuis' is a completely detached house built of marl.
On the ground floor, you will find the living room and semi-open kitchen. The comfortable seating area with a gas fireplace ensures cozy evenings and, of course, a space to relax. The semi-open kitchen is fully equipped to prepare your own Burgundian dinner or bake fresh rolls in the morning. If you want to fully experience the holiday feeling, the bakery is a 3-minute walk away for bread and Limburgse vlaai (a type of pie)! Next to the kitchen is the bathroom with a shower and sink. There is also a separate toilet on the ground floor.
On the first floor, you'll find both bedrooms and a second separate toilet.
Outside/Surroundings
In good weather, you can enjoy your private terrace with perhaps the most idyllic view you can imagine. The rolling landscape combined with the babbling Geul River creates beautiful scenery. There is a spacious dining table on the terrace, along with a small piece of lawn with hammocks and your fruit tree. Despite the beautiful view from the house, we also recommend exploring the stunning surroundings! Directly from the mill, you can access hiking trails to explore the most beautiful routes through the hilly landscape. Furthermore, Valkenburg aan de Geul and Gulpen are within walking or cycling distance. In Wijlre, there is a supermarket, bakery, fresh fruit and vegetable shop with local products, and a few cafes and brasseries. In short, plenty of opportunities to fully enjoy all the beauty that South Limburg has to offer!
